Probably, not only to speak well in melodic German, but in Switzerland, in addition to German, to improve their English and French. Vienna has long been famous for its level of education in technical specialties, as well as postgraduate education |
What kind of education do they go to Austria and Switzerland for?
People go to Switzerland for quality financial education, as well as for very good training in the field of hotel management.
Pros and cons of studying in Austria
According to a survey by the German magazine SPIEGEL, the ranking of the best universities in Europe includes 4 faculties of three Austrian universities: in Salzburg it is best to study law, in Vienna – economics, in Graz – technical sciences. The University of Vienna is one of the oldest in German-speaking countries and the largest university in the country, with about 80,000 students, including foreign ones. Vienna and Graz have good technical universities, Leoben has a mining university, and Klagenfurt has a pedagogical university. A special place is occupied by the Danube University of Postgraduate Education, located in Krems, which specializes in European law, management, economics, international relations in Europe, mass media, ecology, medicine. Serious applied research is conducted at this university.
One of the advantages of higher education in Austria is the common internships for students and graduates in various European companies. Students can apply for a work permit while still studying. About 45,000 companies in the country annually hire 130,000 interns. Since 1995, many have been coming on internships for the Leonardo European Cooperation Project, which has organized more than 59 pilot projects.
Until 1972, only students from wealthy families could study at Austrian universities. Then, as a result of social reforms, Austrian universities became free, but there were restrictions on admission: to have an Austrian certificate of secondary education, and for foreigners – a confirmed place of study in their country. When Austria joined the EU, these restrictions were abolished, but quotas were introduced for 8 specialties for all entrants, both for Austrians and foreigners.
Quotas are set for the following specialties:
1.Humanmedizin – medicine
2. Zahnmedizin – dentistry
3. Veterinarmedizin – veterinary medicine
4. Pharmazie – pharmaceuticals
5. Biologie – biology
6. Betriebswirtschaft – economics and organization of production
7.Publizistik- und Kommunikationswissenschaft – journalism and communicative relations
8. Psychologie – psychology
All Austrian universities have their own quotas for these specialties, only Linz University does not have a quota for economic specialties. If the number of enrolled students exceeds the quota, they must pass special exams at the end of the semester, and thus eliminate the excess. If the exam is not passed, you must either wait until the next semester, or change the specialty, if you fail again, the student loses the right to social assistance during studies or a scholarship. Duration of training – 4-6 years.
Quotas were introduced due to the fact that in Austria, compared to other European countries, all universities are public, they have a large influx of foreign students due to low tuition fees, resulting in a shortage of places in these specialties, lack of teachers and quality. education, which was previously at a fairly high level, decreased. Interestingly, the European Court is considering a lawsuit filed by students against Austria, who believe that it is necessary to increase the number of professors, rather than impose quotas. Experts believe that restrictions will remain and, in addition, additional barriers will be introduced for graduate students.
The cost of studying at Austrian universities for foreigners is approximately 726 euros per semester (depending on the specialty). Accommodation in Austria costs from 400 to 700 euros per month (housing – 250-300 euros, food – 200 euros, insurance – 60 euros, out-of-pocket expenses and transport – 100 euros).
Requirements for foreigners entering Austrian universities:
Certificate equivalent to the Austrian Matura (Reifezeugnis), and a document confirming that they are already enrolled in the host country. The requirements for admission to various faculties change from year to year, so applicants must first clarify the information at the Austrian Embassy in their country. Applications are sent to the admissions committee (Evidenzstelle) of the selected university no later than September 1 to start classes in winter and February 1 to start classes in summer.
