Don’t buy a dog just for the child

Buying a dog just for his child – parents shouldn’t do that in view of the tasks that lie ahead. "If you’ve always wanted a dog and never got around to it, now is the opportunity" says animal trainer Lunzer. "But if this is not the case and you just want to buy the dog for the sake of your child, the clear recommendation is: hands off. You are doing yourself and your child – and also the dog – a disservice."

Dog is like an ally to children

A dog can have several advantages for children. "It’s like an extremely comfortable pillow" says dog expert Udo Kopernik. "A dog is always there for the child, likes to cuddle and does not scold like parents when the grades are not right." Besides, everything can be entrusted to him – "unlike siblings, it doesn’t reveal anything" – and be a sure ally against your parents. "In addition, children learn to take responsibility and to be tolerant of the needs of others."

The weather sponsor campaign begins on Wednesday. High Quirin is still moving across Europe, so meteorologists are already looking for the namesake for the weather conditions in 2019. Everyone can buy a high and low pressure area.

It’s that time again: Berlin meteorologists will be awarding new weather sponsorships from Wednesday. The campaign is a cooperation between the Berlin Weather Map Association and the Free University of Berlin.

Application as a weather sponsor: By post – Berliner Wetterkarte e.V. at the Institute for Meteorology FU Berlin, keyword "Campaign weather sponsor" Carl-Heinrich-Becker-Weg 6-10, 12165 Berlin.By email – wetterpate@met.fu-berlin.de. Per fax: 030 – 791 9002. You can download the forms here.

The action allows any applicant who is fast enough to determine a name for a high or low pressure area. A high costs 355 euros, a low 236 euros. As of midnight on Wednesday, applications for high and low pressure areas will be accepted, like the initiators of the campaign "Weather godfather" notify. Since 2002 citizens can choose names for pressure areas. According to the information, lows have male first names and highs female first names in 2019 – this changes annually.

Three rules for naming

Applicants should note that they cannot choose the time for their high or low pressure area. The institute also names three rules for assigning names.

Only first names recognized by the civil registry are allowed. Except for German umlauts, they should not contain any special characters. Double names, surnames or company names are not permitted. The only exception: They also appear as first names. Applicants should pay attention to the gender when applying. In even years, high pressure areas have male names and low pressure areas have female names. In odd years it is exactly the opposite.

Every year, according to the institute’s website, around 50-60 highs and 130-150 lows are named. Since this is not foreseeable at the beginning of the year, there are also so-called "Risk sponsorships". It cannot be guaranteed that there will be a baptism at the end of the year. In this case, the sponsors do not have to pay either. The following applies to the application: the faster it is sent, the greater the chances.

The FU Institute for Meteorology has been giving names to high and low pressure areas that influence the weather in Central Europe since 1954. Weather services and the media publish these names, which appear on numerous weather maps. With the proceeds from the sale, the student weather observation can be continued at the Berlin-Dahlem station.

The chances of seeing shooting stars are very good this month. Not only are there a particularly large number, the view is also undisturbed. Highlight: Monday night.

When to See the Most Shooting Stars Where to Best Watch the Perseids That is why meteor showers are called Perseids

August is the month of the shooting stars: the Perseids meteor shower is considered to be the most productive of the whole year. According to experts, the shooting stars are easy to see this year.

When you can see the most falling stars

On the coming weekend in the night from Sunday to Monday (August 12th to 13th) the current will peak. But even in the night from Saturday to Sunday, which is cheaper for employees, the falling stars can be seen well because there is a new moon and therefore no moonlight disturbs the view.

Experts reckon with up to 100 meteors (shooting stars) per hour, as the chairman of the Association of Star Friends, Sven Melchert, says in Heppenheim in southern Hesse. Among them are some particularly bright traces of light that can be seen for a few seconds.

Where to best watch the Perseids

Night from Friday to Saturday: During the night there are changing clouds throughout Germany, making it difficult to see the Perseids. The best chance of catching a glimpse of the shooting stars is in a strip from the Black Forest to Rügen.

Night from Saturday to Sunday: Away from the coast, the chances are good that you can see the Perseids everywhere. The sky is only slightly cloudy, partly clear.

Night from Sunday to Monday: You can also see the Perseids on this night. The sky is only slightly cloudy and clear in places. Only on the coast is it a little cloudy.

That is why the meteor showers are called Perseids

The Perseids got their name because they seem to originate from the constellation Perseus. Every stream of shooting stars has such a point, says Melchert. Because the earth flies on its orbit around the sun through clouds of small debris left by comets on their respective orbit. The Perseids’ causative comet is called 109P / Swift-Tuttle. It was discovered in 1862 and takes around 133 years for its orbit around the earth.

One hour ahead in spring, one hour back in autumn: the time change has been a ritual that has been common for decades. In Brussels, the EU states and the European Parliament are currently discussing its abolition. The MPs now want to put pressure on. But there is not enthusiasm everywhere.

The plans to abolish the time change in the EU are still making slow progress. In the European Parliament in Brussels, the responsible transport committee wants to determine its position today. The ultimately decisive Council of the Member States has not yet agreed on a common position. This would be a prerequisite for the time change to really be abolished.

Vote on time at the end of March

According to the CDU MEP Peter Liese, there is a clear majority in the EU Parliament in favor of abolishing the time change currently required twice a year. According to him, however, it is unclear which date the MPs will vote for.

While the EU Commission proposed 2019, other parliamentary committees have voted for 2020. The transport committee now wants to plead for 2021. The vote in plenary is planned for the end of March.

Do you prefer summer or winter time?

Last September, the EU Commission officially proposed the abolition of time changes. The member states should then decide whether they want to use summer or winter time permanently.

An evaluation of various studies had previously shown that the originally hoped for energy savings through the time change are only marginal, while at the same time citizens are increasingly complaining about negative effects on their health. In an EU survey, 84 percent of the participants recently spoke out in favor of abolishing the time change.

Until recently, it was unclear when the governments of the member states would agree on a common position to abolish the regulation. After the last ministerial meeting on the subject in December, it was only said that the time change would end "no earlier than 2021" come. One of the reasons given was that there was a "Time patchwork quilt" could come if neighboring countries decide uncoordinatedly for summer or winter time after the abolition of the time change.

Fishing in southern Norway – hotspot for fishermen

Southern Norway is a real Dorado for fishing. The rugged archipelago has been very popular for decades. The coastline is formed by thousands of small islands that have made this region one of the most popular destinations for sea anglers. The open sea can be reached quickly by boat. When the weather is rough, you can fish safely behind one of the small islands. Lost days are very rare in the south of Norway and the abundance of fish is legendary. Due to the foothills of the Gulf Stream, the best conditions prevail in this region. Southern Norway is also a popular destination in autumn and winter as it is ice-free there all year round. Only the fish species sometimes alternate during the season. With a little luck, more than ten different species can be hooked on within one week of vacation. The main target fish are ling and tusk, cod, pollack, coalfish, mackerel and herring. But exotic species such as the monkfish and halibut also bite the bait from time to time. If you want to try your hand at flatfish, you should look for shallow, sandy bays. Trolling for sea trout and salmon is also very successful. In addition to fishing in salt water, countless lakes in the hinterland invite you to take a trout detour. Several good salmon rivers are fishable in the summer months.

Fjord Norway – land of fish, fjords & Trolls

Fjords cut deep into the country, surrounded by high mountains and crowned by glaciers with eternal ice: the region north of Stavanger up to Ålesund offers anglers almost inexhaustible opportunities. The area around the Hanseatic city of Bergen is particularly well developed. Especially the areas in the mouth areas of the fjords and on the open coast attract many keen sea anglers to this region every year, and natural bait fishing is very popular. But not only fishing in the sea finds a rich field of activity here.
